  • Mindfulness training. Mindfulness is a form of meditation that trains the individual to concentrate on the moment, and to be keenly aware of one’s breathing motions.  The deep breathing exercises promote relaxation and reduce stress.

Exposure Therapy

Prolonged exposure therapy involves confronting the details of the traumatic event in order to slowing, over time, desensitize the individual to its power to destabilize them.  The therapy includes repeated discussion of the event, writing about it, drawing images related to it, and even visiting the place of the actual event.

 Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR involves the patient following the hand movements of the therapist while simultaneously talking about the traumatic event.  By focusing on the repetitive hand movements, the individual has something to distract them while they process the traumatic event verbally.

 Counseling and Therapy

The most widely used talk therapy for treating PTSD is cognitive based therapy, or CBT.  CBT is a short-term therapy that helps the individual identify the irrational thoughts that impact one’s emotional state.  The therapist helps the individual learn how the trauma has changed their thought patterns and behaviors, and helps them replace irrational patterns with healthy new responses.

 Exercise and Healthy Diet

The emotional and mental health benefits of regular cardio exercise are well established.  PTSD symptoms can be mitigated by adopting a routine for regular workouts, walks, hiking, cycling, running—any physical activity that raises heart rate and releases endorphins.  A healthy diet rich in proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, and whole grains will also benefit brain health.

Family Support and Group Support
