Does Aetna Cover Benzodiazepine Detox?
Aetna covers medically supervised benzodiazepine detox. Benzo withdrawal can cause seizures and requires a slow taper, not an abrupt stop. Verify your benefits free.
Aetna Benzodiazepine Detox Coverage
Yes, and this is one to take seriously. Benzodiazepines — alprazolam, clonazepam, lorazepam, diazepam — sit alongside alcohol as the withdrawal syndromes that can be fatal. Stopping abruptly after sustained use can cause seizures, delirium and, rarely, death.
Aetna covers medically supervised benzodiazepine withdrawal management when the clinical picture supports it, and that picture is usually straightforward to document.

Why Benzo Detox Takes Longer Than Other Detox
Most detox admissions run 3–7 days. Benzodiazepine tapers frequently run considerably longer, because the safe approach is a gradual reduction — often converting to a long-acting agent such as diazepam and stepping down over weeks — rather than a rapid clear-out.
This creates a practical problem with authorization. A plan reviewing against a standard detox timeline may question a longer stay, and the answer is clinical documentation of the taper protocol and the seizure risk. Good programs know how to make this case. It is worth asking an admissions team directly how they handle benzodiazepine taper authorization before you choose them.
Inpatient vs Residential Benzo Detox
Inpatient hospitalization is appropriate where there is seizure history, very high dose use, significant co-occurring medical illness, or combined alcohol and benzodiazepine dependence.
Residential withdrawal management suits most other cases — 24-hour monitoring in a non-hospital setting, with medical oversight of the taper.
Aetna generally requires prior authorization for both. The admitting program obtains it.
What Happens After the Taper
Benzodiazepine dependence often develops from a legitimate prescription for anxiety or insomnia, which means the underlying condition is still there when the taper ends. Detox alone, without a plan for treating that, tends to lead straight back to use.
Aetna covers the continuing care — PHP, IOP, outpatient therapy and psychiatry — and integrated treatment where a mental-health condition sits underneath. See Aetna dual diagnosis rehab.
Protracted withdrawal symptoms can persist for months after a taper. That is a recognized phenomenon, not a personal failing, and it is manageable with the right support.
Why Rapid Detox Is Not Offered
Some facilities advertise accelerated or ultra-rapid detox. For benzodiazepines this is not a recognized standard of care, and Aetna’s medical-necessity review is grounded in ASAM criteria, which support a graduated taper.
The reason is physiological rather than bureaucratic. Sustained benzodiazepine use changes GABA receptor function, and those receptors need time to readjust. Compressing the timeline increases seizure risk without improving the outcome.
Combined Alcohol and Benzodiazepine Dependence
The two are frequently used together, and combined withdrawal is considerably more dangerous than either alone. This is a clear indication for inpatient rather than residential withdrawal management, and it strengthens the case for authorization.
Be specific at assessment about quantities and frequency for both substances. Underreporting here is genuinely dangerous — the taper protocol depends on it.
Check Your Plan Is Still Active
If your Aetna plan came from the Health Insurance Marketplace, it ended on December 31, 2025. CVS Health withdrew Aetna from the ACA individual market for the 2026 plan year across all seventeen states where it sold those plans. Employer coverage, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid plans were not affected.
Confirm which you hold before a facility runs your benefits. A verification against a terminated policy comes back as no coverage, which is not the same thing as being uninsurable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I detox from benzodiazepines at home?
Not safely from sustained or high-dose use. Abrupt cessation risks seizures. A taper should be medically supervised, and Aetna covers supervised withdrawal management.
How long does Aetna cover a benzo taper?
Coverage follows medical necessity rather than a fixed number of days. Benzodiazepine tapers often run longer than other detox, and clinical documentation of the protocol supports continued authorization.
Does Aetna require prior authorization for detox?
Generally yes for inpatient and residential withdrawal management. The admitting program obtains it on your behalf.
What if my benzo use started with a prescription?
That is the most common route. It does not change your coverage, and it makes treating the underlying anxiety or insomnia part of the plan rather than an afterthought.
