TriWest Coverage for Addiction & Mental Health Treatment
TriWest administers VA Community Care — so the rules are different from a commercial insurance plan.
About TriWest Behavioral Health Coverage
TriWest Healthcare Alliance is not a health insurer in the usual sense. It administers the VA Community Care Network, which allows eligible veterans to receive care from community providers paid for by the Department of Veterans Affairs. If you are a veteran being referred out for addiction or mental health treatment, TriWest is likely the organisation processing that referral.
What TriWest Typically Covers
Care is authorised by the VA rather than purchased by you. Detox, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and medication-assisted treatment are all within scope where the VA authorises them. The decision rests on VA eligibility and the referral, not on a plan benefit schedule.
Medical Detox
Supervised withdrawal, typically three to ten days. Usually covered when a clinician documents that withdrawal carries medical risk — standard with alcohol, benzodiazepines and opioids.
Residential Treatment
Twenty-four hour care in a licensed facility. Almost always requires pre-authorisation, and continued stay is reviewed periodically rather than approved in one block.
Partial Hospitalization (PHP)
Full treatment days with evenings at home. Often approved as a step down from residential, or as an alternative when residential is not authorised.
Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Several sessions a week around work or study. The level most commonly approved first.
Outpatient Therapy
Individual and group therapy, usually subject to a copay per session.
Medication-Assisted Treatment
Buprenorphine, naltrexone and methadone for opioid use disorder. Covered, though formulary and prior-authorisation rules vary.
How TriWest Referrals Work
The route normally begins with the VA, not the facility. A VA clinician assesses the need, and if community care is appropriate a referral is generated and authorised through TriWest. A facility must be part of the Community Care Network to accept it. Approaching a facility directly, without a VA referral, is the most common reason the process stalls.
Pre-Authorisation
Authorisation comes through the VA referral itself and specifies the type of care and number of visits or days. If treatment needs to continue beyond what was authorised, the facility must request an extension through the VA. Ask early how many days have been authorised.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does TriWest cover rehab for veterans?
Where the VA authorises community care, yes. Detox, residential and outpatient addiction treatment can all be provided through the Community Care Network.
Do I need a VA referral first?
Almost always. Community care is authorised by the VA, and a facility cannot usually bill TriWest without that referral in place.
Is TriWest the same as TRICARE?
No. TRICARE covers serving personnel, retirees and families. TriWest administers community care for veterans through the VA. They are different programmes with different rules.
What if the programme I want is not in the network?
It cannot normally be paid for through TriWest. Ask the VA which Community Care Network facilities offer the level of care you need.
