For a lot of people the pet is the reason treatment keeps getting postponed. There is no one to take the dog, boarding for 30 to 90 days is expensive, and leaving an animal with someone who may not keep it is not an option worth considering. Pet-friendly rehab exists precisely because this stops people from going.
The Treatment Specialist is a free directory of licensed programs nationwide. Call 866-644-7911 and we will tell you which programs genuinely accept pets, and under what conditions.
What pet-friendly actually means in practice
The phrase covers at least three different arrangements, and facilities are not always clear about which one they offer.
- Pets in residence. Your animal lives with you for the duration of treatment. This is the rarest version and usually comes with size, breed and temperament limits.
- On-site boarding or nearby kennels. The pet stays on the property or close by, with scheduled visits. More common than full residence and considerably easier to arrange.
- Visitation only. The pet stays elsewhere and is brought in on visiting days. Worth knowing, because some facilities describe this as pet-friendly.
Ask which of the three you are being offered before you arrange anything. The difference matters enormously once you are 300 miles from home.
Service animals and emotional support animals are not the same thing
A service animal trained to perform a specific task for a disability has protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act, and a licensed treatment facility generally has to accommodate one. An emotional support animal does not carry the same protection in this setting, and acceptance is at the program’s discretion.
If your animal is a trained service dog, say so early and clearly. If it is an ESA, you are asking rather than asserting, and it helps to have documentation from your prescriber ready.
Questions to ask before admission
- Are there weight, breed or species restrictions?
- What vaccination records and veterinary paperwork do you need, and how recent?
- Who cares for the animal while you are in group, therapy or medical appointments?
- Is there an additional fee, and is it per stay or per week?
- What happens during detox, when you may not be well enough to care for an animal?
- Does the policy change between detox, residential and outpatient phases?
Where to look
Pet-friendly programs cluster where there is space: properties with grounds rather than clinical buildings in dense urban areas. Searches for pet friendly rehab in California and Texas are the two we see most, and both states have options. We also work with a residential program in rural Ohio that accepts pets.
Do not let the pet decide this
If a genuinely pet-friendly program is not available in your area or on your insurance, the answer is not to postpone treatment indefinitely. Boarding for the length of a stay, a friend or family member on a written arrangement, or a shorter level of care such as PHP or IOP that lets you sleep at home are all real alternatives. We can walk through them with you.
How insurance usually works
Treatment is billed through health insurance in the normal way. Pet accommodation is almost never covered and is usually a private fee if one applies. Whether the program is in-network or out-of-network with your plan is the bigger financial question, and we can check that before you commit. Call 866-644-7911.
