If you or your loved one is seeking addiction, mental health, or dual diagnosis treatment at a non 12 step rehab in California, you have come to the right place. Although Alcoholics Anonymous’ 12 step program has been integrated throughout many addiction treatment programs in the U.S. and abroad, the underlying principles of the program do not resonate with everyone. Non 12 step rehabs offer individuals a different treatment philosophy that is more rooted in self-empowerment versus a reliance on a higher power to free them from addiction.
About Non 12 Step Rehabs California
One of the most important steps to take when deciding to seek treatment is to locate a rehab program that is in alignment with one’s own core beliefs. This is essential because if the person in recovery does not connect with the philosophy or style of the treatment program it will basically become a wasted effort. Being engaged and participatory is crucial for the individual to gain useful insights and tools that can help them overcome addiction or a dual diagnosis. If there is dissonance between the program and the person’s beliefs, nothing will stick. In worst cases, the individual may be entirely closed off to treatment altogether.
Not everyone holds to a spiritual belief system. Traditional 12 step programming is built upon a foundation of spiritually-based principles, as well as the assumption that addiction is a disease over which the individual has no control. Responding to the need for an alternative treatment philosophy, non 12 step groups began emerging in the 1970s and include a diverse array of non 12 step approaches to addiction recovery. As the addiction and mental health industry continues to evolve and modernize, more programs are embracing alternative methods in response to demand for options to the 12-step philosophy.
Non 12 Step Recovery Groups
Treatment programs that incorporate a non 12 step methodology may base their programming on elements found within the following existing non 12 step groups:
SMART Recovery
The SMART Recovery model is science-based and emphasizes self-empowerment. The program offers a four-point program for success in recovery:
- Building and maintaining motivation
- Coping with and managing urges
- Managing thoughts, feelings and behaviors
- Living a balanced life.
The SMART Recovery program is based on the belief that people can gain control over their own lives. SMART teaches techniques that help participants achieve self-directed change while taking responsibility for their behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. It encourages individuals to believe that they can recover from addiction, versus the AA assumption that it is a lifelong disease.
Secular Organizations for Sobriety (SOS)
James Christopher founded Secular Organizations for Sobriety in the 1980s because he objected to AA’s Christian-based platform. Believing that there should be a distinction between religious or spiritual beliefs and handling a substance abuse problem, SOS was born. Its primary position is “sobriety priority,” maintaining that sobriety has to become one’s priority and you “cannot use, no matter what,” making it an abstinence-based program.
Women for Sobriety (WFS)
Women for Sobriety was founded by Jean Kirkpatrick in the 1970s as a program that is specific to women. Kirkpatrick believed there are inherent differences between men and women, thereby requiring different recovery approaches. The premise of WFS is that women begin using alcohol or drugs as a means of managing difficult emotional issues, and addiction may result. In contrast to AA’s focus on humility, WFS emphasizes self-empowerment and self-value. WFS helps its members substitute negative thoughts with positive, self-affirming attitudes through its “13 affirmations,” a central program element.
LifeRing Secular Recovery
LifeRing Secular is an international non-profit recovery community that is based on the belief that people who battle addiction possess both an “addict self” and a “sober self.” The secular program focuses on helping members increase the power of the “sober self” by finding self-control and strength from within. LifeRing provides both community meetings and an online support group.
Non 12 Step and Holistic Recovery
Holistic activities and therapies are often found in tandem with non 12 step recovery programs, as they both nourish the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Mental health issues, including addiction, are often fueled by unresolved emotional pain, such as trauma, abuse, grief and loss. Stress is another common trigger for addiction and mental health disorders. Holistic and experiential therapies can enhance self-examination, which helps in acquiring new insights that are useful while in therapy. The holistic activities also promote relaxation and reduce stress, intrinsic to healing as well as effective tools in managing triggers in long-term recovery.
Holistic therapies may include:
- Guided meditation
- Yoga
- Massage therapy
- Mindfulness therapy
- Journaling
- Art therapy
- Equine therapy
- Acupuncture
- Gardening therapy
Non 12 step programs tend to focus more on the individual and less on the collective group. This translates to more of these individual-experience activities and more one-on-one psychotherapy versus group therapy.
